7 WAYS TO IMPROVE SAFETY WITH PRE-USE FLT INSPECTIONS.
According to the RTITB, a crucial element of safe forklift truck operation is conducting proper pre-use inspections. As a manager or supervisor of warehouse operations, what do you need your employees to do?
1
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Remember, you and your employees aren’t expected to be engineers. Simply checking the general working parts for wear and tear will prevent small problems from turning into bigger problems.
Use SG World’s Pre-use FLT Inspection system to keep the process of checks even simpler and clearer.
2
CHECK EVERY TIME
Even if a FLT has been checked that day, it could have sustained damage whilst being in use by another operator that day. Always check before each use.
SG World’s Pre-use FLT Inspection systems are designed to be used before each FLT use.
3
UNDERSTAND THE LAW
Remember, failing to carry out a pre-use check may mean your operators are breaking health and safety law, by failing in their duty of care to others. You also need to properly record the checks that have taken place, to cover you in the event of an incident.
SG World’s Pre-use FLT Inspection systems help you to comply with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
4
BE SPECIFIC
Not every truck is the same and you will need to ensure that your pre-use check is suitable for that particular piece of equipment.
5
MANAGE AND SUPERVISE
According to a recent RTITB test, a large percentage of operators didn’t know how to conduct certain checks. Supervisors and managers need to understand pre-use checks themselves in order to ensure that the correct procedures are being followed.
SG World’s Pre-use FLT Inspection systems offers a clear, concise way of checking your FLTs to help you manage the process.
6
PROVIDE TRAINING
Although pre-use checks are covered in forklift operator training, the RTITB recently found that this is an area where operators are performing worst. Ensure you provide your workers with suitable training to ensure your operators have these essential skills.
7
REMEMBER TO PRIORITISE SAFETY
During your busy days and with so many other things to consider, it can be easy to forget important safety practices, such as not operating controls from outside the FLT, wearing PPE and, of course, completing a pre-use safety check! During your busy day, remember that it’s you and your operator’s safety that is the number one priority.
