Fire Safety Signage

Fire Safety Signage

Fire safety signage will guide staff and visitors to safety in an emergency, tell them what action to take and clearly identify life-saving fire equipment. Fire Signage falls into four categories:

  • Fire action notice: explaining what to do and not do in the event of a fire
  • Fire equipment: highlighting where fire fighting equipment is located
  • Fire exit and door: marking the route to emergency exits and clearly identifying fire doors
  • Warning and prohibition: alerting people to danger and warning them of unsafe actions

There are two pieces of legislation that relate to fire safety signs: the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 (HSR) and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety Order) 2005 (RRFSO). The HSR covers the different types of mandatory fire signs, their placement and the importance of maintenance. The RRFSO outlines the requirement to appoint a ‘responsible person’ to oversee and take charge of fire safety.
